The 5 Principles of Reiki to Live By

Reiki can be defined as universal energy, a method used for relaxation based on the idea that healing energy can be transferred from the hands of one person to another. If you are familiar with Reiki, you might have heard about the 5 principles coined by Dr Mikao Usui. The principles are the suggested guidelines for all practitioners and enthusiasts to live by for a healthier and happier life. Find out here on how you can learn Reiki healing

Upon attending a Reiki course, one of the first things you are taught is the 5 principles. Dr Usui introduced the principles to help his students lead a better life. Sometimes, they are referred to as ideals or precepts. Because Japanese is complex, some words have different variations. For instance, the principle of “be kind to people” would be translated to mean “be compassionate to yourself and others”. The meaning of these principles may, at times be slightly different.

How the Principles of Reiki can Help You

While this form of therapy can be used solely for healing, it can also be used to improve your daily life. Given that the 5 principles are more of mantras to live by, how you use them is fully dependent on you. You can write them down, recite them in mind, or say them out aloud. While there is no particular way to implement them, when used correctly, they can be a great guide for your life. At first, it might be difficult to follow them through, but just give it a little more effort, and with time, you will get used to following them. Reiki Healing

1. Just for today, I will not worry

Each time you worry, your divine purpose fades. Worry only introduces tension and stress in your body, both mentally and physically. It is the topmost cause of negative energy, the reason this is the most important principle. Worry degrades the soul, body and mind, transforming you into an unpleasant person. It can cause you to be rude, impatient, and angry, creating a thin line of balance between your soul, body, and mind. “Just for today” means living the moment and not being too conscious about the future. If you find yourself worrying, remind yourself to live in the moment just for today. With time, you will learn to experience positive emotions of peace and freedom.

2. Just for Today, I will not be Angry

Once you learn to incorporate the first principle in your daily life, this second one will be easy to learn and embrace. Anger presents itself in the form of anxiety and stress, a negative emotion that weighs you down. Once you learn the tricks of controlling your stress, worries, and concerns, it gets easier to manage your emotions. You only need to remind yourself that the feelings of anger are natural, and you don’t have to beat yourself over them. They are only bad because they taint your spirit and block everything good from your life and so need to be gotten rid of. First, acknowledge that you are angry and then allow the energy to transform you and invite compassion and positivity. Take deep breaths, relax, and let go.

3. Just for Today, I will do my Work Honestly

When you do your work as you should, you attract more purpose and meaning into your life. You can also interpret it in terms of not being corrupt at work by lying to your boss. It could be calling in sick when you are out doing other personal tasks or also taking office stationery for self-gain. It can be taken further to reflect on the number of times you slack at work and not complete your tasks according to schedule. Even for the unemployed, do you stay in bed all day and not do anything at all in the house, including cleaning utensils? This principle invites you to function at your best capacity just for today. Give your best at work, to the best of your ability and be honest with what you do. It does not mean working all hours of the day and not creating time for fun and breaks. It only means that when you work today, give your ultimate best.

4. Just for Today, I will give thanks for my many Blessings

No matter how insignificant the blessings in your life might seem, it is important that you show gratitude. Every day, take a moment to pause and acknowledge the blessings in your life. Keeping a list of things you need to be grateful for, gives you the chance to be amazed at how much you need to be thankful for. Gratitude is one of the most powerful things a human being can have and give. It is a vital practice in personal development that requires time and effort to accomplish to which once achieved, can make you happier and kinder. Even for the basics, be grateful for the gift of breath, a roof over your head, today’s meal, and so forth. Once you learn to appreciate such little yet mighty blessings, you will begin to appreciate and improve the quality of your life. The trick is, do not focus on materialistic things. Pay attention to things that money cannot buy.

5. Just for Today, I will be Kind to my Neighbor and Every Living Thing

The last principle is about connecting with people and all living things. Did you know that you receive what you give? Every time you let positive thoughts control you, more positive things and feelings get into your life. The same effect is translated when you allow negativity to control you. Learn to be kind to other people. Kindness is one of the simplest things to give. Once you begin showing kindness to other people and all living things, you will begin to feel that everything is interconnected. Just be nice and kind to everything around you expecting nothing in return, and chances are, you will receive back tenfold of what you have given.

Even though it might seem overwhelming to live by these 5 principles, start with just one today. For more benefits, schedule a Reiki session and experience the full effects of these principles.
